Achieve a long service life with the correct choice of material

When you design your product, you put a lot of money, energy and consideration into achieving the best possible function, good appearance and high reliability. Corrosion, wear and fatigue resistance may not be the first factors you consider.

However, material selection is crucial to obtain a long service life and to avoid damage such as operation failure – for instance due to inadequate mechanical strength – or unacceptable appearance due to corrosion products.

If you choose the correct materials for your product from the beginning, you can prevent damage deriving from corrosion, wear and mechanical impact. In many cases, you may completely avoid corrosion by choosing a resistant material for its actual application environment.

Material selection shall be optimized, considering investment and operational costs, such that Life Cycle Costs (LCC) is minimized while providing acceptable safety and reliability.

By drawing on our unique combination of wide theoretical knowledge and practical experience of many years in the fields of metallurgy, corrosion and coating, following will be considered:

  • Corrosion assessments (including corrosion rate calculations)
  • Erosion evaluations (including erosion rate calculations)
  • Pros and cons with the use of different materials (e.g. performance limitations for specific materials)
  • Standards, specifications and recommended practices
  • Corrosive environments in oil and gas production facilities
  • Impact of likely and possible changes to operating conditions
  • Long-term performance of materials in oil and gas production facilities corrosion mitigation methods
  • Evaluation of failure probabilities, failure modes, criticalities and consequences. Attention shall be paid to any adverse effects material selection may have on human health, environment, safety and material assets.
  • Environmental issues related to corrosion inhibition and other chemical treatments.
  • For main systems where materials/fabrication represent significant investments and/or operational costs, an LCC analysis shall be basis for material selection.
